Kids will love this Valentine’s day counting activities for preschoolers and kindergarthers where they will practice counting 1-12 plus writing numbers too. Use the free valentines day printable, children will reinforce subitizing and counting skills. Use pompoms or play dough add ‘chocolate’ to each counting card to accurately reflect the number. These can also fit inside a task box, so prep them once and have them ready for each year.

To prepare

  • Download the activity cards below
  • Print in color or black and white
  • Cut the cards out.
  • Prepare some pom poms with tongs on each table
  • Print two sets of these hippo cards and laminate them for durability. Print any set you wish according to the needs of your group of students.

To play

  • Students will be working on their cards in a group. They take one card and identify the number on that card.
  • They then grab a tong, and place that many pom poms, they can also make playdough balls on the heart card to add chocolate.
  • Then they could also make dough balls to show the number (as an extension activity).
  • They will also trace the numbers on each card.
  • I usually check their work as I go around the class.
  • This fun activity can be repeated for practice!

You can alternatively use dot markers to add their dots on the mats using the black and white cards. You could possibly have your pre-schoolers work on easier numbers by counting 1 to 5 and the kindergarteners to work on counting 1 to 10.

A great way to work on these cards is to create a competition where the kids have to complete all the cards in a group.

This game can also be played as a group, It’ll be even more enjoyable to have the competition game played between groups.
