Color Discrimination

When kids sort colors, they’re learning to identify, match, and categorize. This might sound simple, but it’s a big deal for their cognitive development.
I remember when my students first started learning colors. We used to play a game with colored blocks, and it was amazing to see how quickly they picked up on the different shades and names.
Activities like these lay the foundation for more complex skills, like reading and math. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!
Activities with pom poms
What You Need:
- Printable shark cards with colored dots (you can download and print them at home)
- A variety of colorful pom-poms
- A container or tray to keep everything organized
Steps to Follow:
- Print the Shark Cards: Download and print the shark cards. Each card will have different colored dots on the sharks. You can laminate them for durability if you like.
- Set Up the Pom-Poms: Spread out the colorful pom-poms. Make sure you have pom-poms that match the colors on the shark cards.
- Start Sorting: Ask your child to match the pom-poms to the colored dots on the shark cards. For example, if a shark card has red dots, your child should find the red pom-poms and place them on the dots. You can use tongs here for an added fine motor practice.
- Discuss Colors: As your child sorts the pom-poms, talk about the colors. You can ask questions like, “What color is this pom-pom?” or “Can you find a blue pom-pom to match the blue dot?”
- Have Fun: Encourage your child to enjoy the process. If they make a mistake, gently correct them and guide them to the right color.
Extension Ideas
- Turn It into a Game: Time your child to see how quickly they can sort the pom-poms correctly.
- Use Different Textures: Mix in some different textured pom-poms to add a sensory element to the activity.
- Incorporate Songs or Rhymes: Sing a song about colors while sorting to keep things lively and engaging.
