Counting to ten is a big deal in preschool. Actually it is a big deal in all of math. Out number system is a base ten system meaning that all of our numbers are based on increments of ten. When we are working with preschoolers we want them to practice using numbers 0-10 over and over. “Knowing numbers” is such a vague term and there is so much for our kids to know about numbers. Focusing on numbers 0-10 long after your preschooler “knows numbers up to ten” allows them to develop a deeper understanding of numbers. And it will lay the foundation for numbers bigger than 10.
